SIOUX CITY — Cherokee girls basketball team opened in 2025-2026 season with a statement road win at Sioux City West on Monday, 68-19.
Iowa Grandstand Sports Class 3A No. 4 ranked Braves wasted little time to bury the Wolverines, running out to a 26-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. They had established a 39 point (49-10) lead at halftime, playing the entire second half with the continous clock.
Cherokee added to the Sioux City West deficit, maintaining a 41-point lead at the conclusion of the third quarter. The stingy Braves feasted defensively. They limited West to only one point over the final eight minutes of the game.
Twelve different girls saw action for Cherokee with senior Kadyn Volkert and junior Deidra Doeden finishing with double-doubles in the win. Volkert scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. She also recorded three assists and three steals. Doeden had game-best in points (20), and rebounds (11). She also had two assists, one steal and a blocked shot.
Addy Wolfswinkel was the third Cherokee player in double figures, finishing with 15 points.
One area of concern for veteran Cherokee coach Brandon Slaughter has to be foul shooting and turovers. Cherokee finished 11-of-24 (45.8%) on their free throws, and committed 20 turnovers against a bad West team.
Cherokee improves to 7-1 all-time against West, during the Bound Era dating back to January 2019.
UP NEXT:
Next for the Braves will be a non-conference battle of ranked teams. Cherokee travels to Class 2A No. 10 ranked Emmetsburg on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Administrators note: Sioux City West did not report their information/statistcs on the game.
