POCAHONTAS — After getting an season opening win at home a week earlier, RIdge View girls basketball team found the competition to be much more difficult in Class 2A No. 12 ranked Pocahontas on Tuesday.
The Raptors were down double-digits at the ned of the first quarter (16-6) and had a 24-point deficit (33-9) at halftime. The Raptors outscored Pocahontas Area 13-12 in the third quarter, and finished the second half offensively even with Pocahontas 27-27. The final was still a 60-36 setback for Ridge View.
“To get better, we want to play teams like this, but we need to find a way to compete better for the full four quarters. They certainly exposed some things we need to clean up. Digging a hole early with turnovers and not being able to make shots in the first half even when we did have opportunities really hurt us.”
– Brian Bode, Ridge View head girls basketball coach
Ridge View (1-1) has dropped all three meetings they’ve faced Pocahontas Area since 2023.
It was a rough night for the most part in putting the ball through the basket. The Raptors finished the game at 28.9 percent overall (11-of-38), which included 4-of-16 from 3-point range. Ridge View may be forced to hit the panic button early with its free throw shooting. They finished the game with Pocahontas Area going 10-of-24 for 41.7 percent.
“The second half, we showed that we’re capable of playing better. Overall, we must improve our defensive effort and execution. That starts with more communication and carries into our defensive fundamentals and positioning. You can’t give a team 21 offensive rebounds and expect to stay in it. These are the kinds of games that will hopefully help us learn and grow early in the season.”
– Brian Bode, Ridge View girls basketball coach
On the season, Ridge View is 17-of-43 for 39.5 percent at the charity stripe in its opening two games of the season.
Pocahontas Area shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) from the floor overall, and also struggled with its foul shooting going 9-of 21 for 42.9 percent.
The Indians (1-0) finished with Khloe Mefferd posting a double-double. Mefferd posted game-high’s with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Two other Pocahontas Area players Danica Dreith and Alayna Kakacek each chipped in with 12 points.
Ridge View found itself on the short end of a 40-32 night on the board. Leading the Raptors was Chloe Murphy and Brynlee Grieme each with six.
Leading Ridge View in points was Shea Rapp and Jayna Aschinger each with eight points.
“We did have a number of girls that got into the scoring column so that’s a positive, but would certainly like to see those numbers increase as well.”
– Brian Bode, Ridge View girls basketball coach
