LAWTON — Down goes Lawton-Bronson, Down goes Lawton-Bronson ! Hustle, big shots, no fear sums up a Western Valley Conference narrow 52-49 victory for Ridge View against the host Panthers of Lawton-Bronson on Friday.

Lawton-Bronson battled back from a 11 points first quarter deficit of 17-6 and 29-17 halftime lead by Ridge View. The Panthers pulled to within five points at the conclusion of the third quarter 36-31.

“The girls came out of the gates with some great energy and lots of confidence. I thought our perimeter shooting really set the tone for the game. We were able to get off to a quick start in the first quarter and build on that into the 2nd quarter getting our largest lead at 18. We had some breakdowns defensively, especially in the transition side of things and were out of position and got ourselves into some foul trouble. Pairing that with some of our turnovers and we let them get back into the game.”

Brian Bode, Ridge View head girls basketball coach

Lawton-Bronson outscored Ridge View 32-to-23 in the second half, finishing with three players — Natalie McKenna (16), Bree Jessen (10), Amlyah Drew (10) all finishing in double figures for points scored. Jessen added a team-best seven rebounds to go along with two assists and four steals.

There was very little ‘home-cookin’ putting the ball through the home basket for Lawton-Bronson. The Panthers shot only 29.2 percent (14-of-48) from the floor, including a dismal 4-of-21 (19%) from beyond the 3-point arch. Where the biggest difference came was made free throws. — Lawton Bronson finished with 17 to Ridge View nine. The Raptors shot miserably from the charity stripe, finishing 9-of-20 (45%).

Ridge View also had three players finished with double-digit scoring. They were led by Chloe Murphy’s team-best 13 points. Jayna Aschinger added 12 and Shea Rapp chipped in with 11 points. Rapp (7), Murphy (6), Aschinger (6) accounted for 19 of the team’s 31 total rebounds. Rapp also led the Raptors with three assists and four steals.

“We were able to hold on down the stretch, but we didn’t handle the end of game situations the best we could. Being up nine with just over a minute to go, we could’ve been a bit less aggressive and it allowed them to close the gap.  It was a great learning experience for us. It’s a great way for us to start the conference play off with road victory.”

Brian Bode, Ridge View head girls basketball coach

The Ridge View win avenges a loss to Lawton-Bronson from last December in Holstein. Since 2009 of the Bound Era, Lawton-Bronson leads the all-time head-to-head matchups 13-12.
