Matt Campbell continues to put together his first staff at Penn State. On Thursday, he added a couple more important pieces to the puzzle, including one at a key position that will shape the offense.

Three new assistant coaches are now listed in the Penn State directory. Taylor Mouser is listed as offensive coordinator, Ryan Clanton is listed as offensive line and Deon Broomfield is listed as the “secondary defensive coordinator.”

Mouser was Campbell’s offensive coordinator and tight ends coach at Iowa State, while Clanton was the run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Broomfield was the pass game coordinator and safeties coach for the Cyclones.

Mouser, Clanton and Broomfield are Campbell’s first external additions to the Penn State on-field staff. He is retaining Terry Smith as associate head coach with other responsibilities to be determined. Campbell made five off-field additions earlier in the week.

Mouser, 34, is a long-time Campbell associate who was on staff at Toledo in 2015 as a graduate assistant. Mouser followed Campbell to Iowa State, where over the past decade, he worked as a graduate assistant (2016), assistant director of scouting (2017-18), senior quality control/offense (2019-20), tight ends coach (2021-22), assistant head coach/tight ends coach (2023) and offensive coordinator/tight ends coach (2024-25).

At the tight end position, Mouser coached All-American Charlie Kolar, All-Big 12 second-team selections Chase Allen and Stevo Klotz and 247Sports Freshman All-American Benjamin Brahmer.

Mouser is from Chandler, Ariz., and played defensive line at Adams State from 2009-13.

In 2025, the Iowa State offense ranked No. 73 in scoring offense (27.4 points per game), No. 51 in rushing offense (174.67 yards per game), No. 75 in passing offense (221.4 yards per game) and No. 62 in total offense (396.1 yards per game). Cyclones quarterback Rocco Becht played through a significant injury for a good part of the season.

During Mouser’s first season as offensive coordinator in 2024, the Cyclones ranked No. 41 in scoring offense (31.1 points per game), No. 70 in rushing offense (160.50 yards per game), No. 39 in passing offense (255.7 yards per game) and No. 39 in total offense (416.2 yards per game). Iowa State was 11-3 and played for the Big 12 championship.

Clanton joined Campbell’s staff in 2023, and he tutored Iowa State tackle Jalen Travis, who became the program’s first drafted offensive lineman since 2013 in April.

Clanton previously spent five years as the offensive line coach at Northern Iowa, and he added co-offensive coordinator to his title in 2022. Before that, he spent four seasons at Ventura (Calif.) College, where he held offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and run game coordinator titles.

Clanton played his college football at Oregon where he became a team captain under former coach Chip Kelly. Clanton was a member of the team that played for the BCS National Championship after the 2010 season and also won Rose and Fiesta Bowls the next two seasons.

Broomfield spent the past five seasons coaching safeties at his alma mater, and he added the the pass game coordinator title in 2023. Iowa State’s three starting safeties in 2024 — Malik Verdon (second team), Jeremiah Cooper (honorable mention) and Beau Freyler (honorable mention) — were All-Big 12 selections under Broomfield, whose position group intercepted seven passes that season. Verdon, Cooper and Freyler earned All-Big 12 recognition multiple times in their Cyclone careers.

Other All-Big 12 selections under Broomfield’s tutelage included Anthony Johnson (second team, 2022), Isheem Young (second team, 2021) and Greg Eisworth (honorable mention (2021).

Before arriving at Iowa State in 2021, Broomfield worked as a defensive assistant for the Houston Texans in 2020, the cornerbacks coach at Indiana State (2017-19), the cornerbacks coach at Western Illinois (2016) and the safeties coach at D-III Carthage College in Wisconsin.

Broomfield play at Iowa State from 2010-13 and recorded 133 tackles, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 16 pass breakups and three interceptions. He played a key role in Iowa State’s infamous upset of No. 2 Oklahoma State in 2011 when he made a stop on third down that was followed by a missed field goal. The Cyclones won in double overtime for their only victory over a top-2 team in program history.

Broomfield was a member of the Buffalo Bills practice squad in 2014.

Earlier this week, the Penn State directory featured five new additions from Iowa State: general manager Derek Hoodjer, head strength and conditioning coach Reid Kagy, director of player personnel Trent Slattenow, chief of staff Skip Brabenec and sport performance manager Aaron Hillmann.

Penn State introduced Campbell as its new head coach during a news conference at Beaver Stadium on Monday.
