HOLSTEIN — The annual non-conference meeting between Iowa Prep Illustrated / Iowa Grandstand Sports No. 4-ranked (3A) Cherokee and Ridge View were meeting for the 17th time. It’s a series Ridge View has not fared well in coming into the game having lost 14 straight to the Braves.
Cherokee notched its third win of the season and made it 15 straight with a 58-42 victory.
It was a opening quarter of play where the host Raptors gave Cherokee every ounch of game they had to keep it close. When the first period ended Cherokee was clinging to a one point (14-13) lead. Things went south rather quickly in the second quarter as Ridge View found a lid on the basket going scoreless over better than seven minutes.
Meanwhile, Cherokee kept calling upon their one-two puch of juniors’ Addy Wolfswinkel and Deidra Doeden. The duo combined for 22 of the Braves 33 first half points. Wolfswinkel had 12 and Doeden 10 points. Freshman Shea Rapp led Ridge View the first half with seven points. Now the Raptors found themselves trailing 33-17 at halftime.
That Braves lead expanded to 21 points (49-28) at the end of the third quarter. Ridge View showed some sign of life over the final eight minutes of the game outscoring Cherokee 14-9, but the damage had already been done.
Doeden has bloosomed Since the start of her sophomore season. As a freshman she posted four double-doubles (Points/Rebounds). Her junior season Doeden had 16 double-doubles. And in Monday’s win Doeden for the third straight season finished with a double-double against the Raptors, ending with 18 points and a game-best 15 rebounds.
Already this season Doeden has had a double-double in each of her first three games. For her career her total stands at 23 double-doubles.
Wolfswinkel finished with a game-high 22 points for Cherokee, to go with five rebounds, four assists, a steal and blocked shot. The Braves shot 51.1% (23-of-45) overall from the floor, but the mystery continues with consistent shooting primarily 3-point and free throws.
Cherokee ranks 35th overall in Class 3A in overall field goal percentage on the season, and 53rd in free throw percentage overall.
Ridge View , now fashioning a 3-2 record was led in scoring by Jayna Aschinger with 16 points. Rapp finished with 13. Rapp also grabbed a team-best’s with five rebounds and dealt out four assists. The Raptors shot 32.6 percent (15-of-46) overall, including 7-of-21 from behind the 3-point line. Ridge View too struggled with their foul shooting winding up 5-of-11 (45.5%)
