MARCUS — Moving the needle on Friday for Iowa Prep Illustrated / Iowa Grandstand Sports No. 8 ranked (Class 2A) Hinton girls basketball team was senior Sydney Doeschot. Doeschot scored a game-high 36 points, 23 points in the second half of a 65-51 War Eagle victory over MMCRU.

It was a evenly matched first half. There were two ties in the opening quarter, and when it ended, MMCRU led by one-point, 14-13. With 3:18 left in the first half the game was tied once more at 23-23. The first half ended with the host Royals trailing 28-26. Doeschot took the game over in the third quarter scoring 18 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 at the foul line.

Hinton outscored MMCRU 22-7 in the third period and grew the Blackhawks lead to 17 points, 50-33. A 12-0 run in the fourth quarter sealed the MMCRU fate. The only offensive threat for MMCRU the second half was Tia Tentinger. The junior was the only Royals player to make a field goal. Fellow junior Chloe Alesch was the only other player to score. Alesch made 2-of-2 free throws.

Tentinger finished the game with a team-best 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting, including 5-of-10 from beyond the 3-point line, and 2-of-4 at the charity stripe.

Alesch had a game-high nine rebounds for MMCRU, Eight different Royals had at least one rebound, but MMCRU still finished a minus -9 (34-25) margin on the glass.

What hurt MMCRU’s chances were only nine attempts and five makes (55.6%) at the foul line. The Royals also committed 19 turnovers to just 11 for Hinton.

On Monday, MMCRU hosted non-conference opponent Lawton-Bronson in Remsen. George-Little Rock hosted MMCRU in War Eagle Conference play on Tuesday. The Royals are then off until Monday, June 22 at LeMars Gehlen, in their last game before the holiday break.

Hinton vs. MMCRU boys basketball

Tick-tock, tick-tock the seconds were coming off the clock as the guest Hinton Blackhawks took a 65-63 lead with 1:34 in regulation. The urgency of seeing its undeated record tarnished, MMCRU boys basketball team rallied outscoring Hinton down the stretch 5-0 for the 70-65 War Eagle Conference victory.

First ther was a Josh Peterson steals and feed to Kam Bork. With 22 seconds remaining Eli Schlenger connected on a 3-point basket. Hinton took its last shot with 8.8 seconds and missed with Peterson grabbing the board and then getting fouled. With 7.6 seconds remaining following the inbounds, Bork was fouled, stepped to the foul line and as smooth as butter, cool and collected made a pair of free throws to secure the Royals win.

This game throughout was not for the weak hearted. The biggest lead of the game was in the first half with Hinton maintaining a 10 point lead (35-25) with two minutes remaining. MMCRU was able to get up four points in the third quarter, but four ties later it was 54-54 going to the fourth quarter.

Hinton’s 6-foot-6 senior Logan Kempema posted a game-best 33 points on 12-of-18 shooting, including 5-of-8 from 3-point territory and a perfect 4-of-4 at the foul line. He also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, added three assists and came away with a steal. Kempema’s total saw 22 of his 33 points come in the first half.

Both teams finished shooting 50 percent or better from the floor. MMCRU finished 30-of-51 (58.8%) overall. Four Royals player’s ended up scoring in double figures. Leading the way was Wyatt Alesch with 19 points. Bork added 15, Schlenger had 12, and Peterson finished with 10 points.

Alesch added five assists, five steals, two blocked shots and a rebound. Michael Schmillen dealt a game-best eight assists for MMCRU, who improve to 4-0 and sixth-ranked in Class 1A by Iowa Prep Illustrated / Iowa Grandstand Sports.

Each of the last four games between the Royals and Blackhawks (2-2) has been decided by five points or fewer.

It’s been an extremely busy week for MMCRU who hosted Lawton-Bronson in Remsen on Monday. Tuesday the Royals traveled to face George-Little Rock (3-3). Tonight, MMCRU boys will face West Sioux (3-3) at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
