ONAWA — The Ridge View girls basketball team earned the Western Valley Conference road victory on Tuesday, taking care of West Monona 58-27
Aside from a combined 42 turnovers by the two teams (20 for Ridge View) the Raptors were able to thrive on efficient shooting the basketball, while defensively making it tough on the host Spartans.
West Monona dug itself an impossible hole from the onset of the game. Ridge View outscored West Monona 13-2 the first eight minutes and took a 22-14 lead into the locker room at halftime. The 12 point second quarter by West Monona was its biggest of the game, nearly as much as the other three quarters combined.
The end of the third quarter, the Ridge View lead had grown back to double-digits at 33-20. The fourth quarter brought Ridge View its most productive eight minute strecth of scoring this season. The previous high was 18 points in the third quarter of a win against MMCRU in the Raptors season opener. Ridge View, previously had scored 16 points on three occassions (Alta-Aurelia, Lawton-Bronson, Kingsley-Pierson) during the fourth quarter this season.
West Monona was held to 28.2 percent (11-of-39) shooting from the floor overall. They drew an o’fer on three-point shots (0-of-14) and was only 50 percent (5-of-10) at the foul line in the loss.
Ashlee Pittet and Brihanna Hill each scored eight points for West Monona, and McKenna Baker grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Spartans whose record falls to 2-3 overall.
Jayna Aschinger scored 20 points, to go with five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Shea Rapp continues to make theft / steals look easy as she had five against the Spartans. Rapp’s season total climbs to 32 steals (4.6 spg.) through seven games this season. Those 32 steals leads the Western Valley Conference, and 15th place overall in Class 2A ranks.
Freshman Olivia Feilmeier had arguably her best performance coming off the Raptors’ bench leading the team with seven rebounds, two blocked shots, and she chipped in four points.

In what turned out to be a see-saw affair, the Ridge View boys basketball team held on to beat West Monona 68-64 on Tuesday at West Monona High School.
Raptors’ senior Kinnick Jensen posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. He also registered seven assists, and pair of steals. Drew Burk posted a team-high 18 points. Adam Stephan chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, a steal, and blocked shot.
Ridge View’s biggest lead of the first half came at the halftime buzzer. The Raptors led by seven points, 36-29.
Shooting the basketball from the floor, Ridge View finished with 15 more shot attemptd than West Monona (55-40). The Raptors finished 25-of-55 for 45.5 percent overall. Ridge View struggled from the three-point line going only 2-of-16 (12.5%), and made 16-of-28 (57.1%) on foul shooting.
West Monona’s record stands 3-3 following the loss. A game-best point total went to the Spartans’ Blake Pekarck with 20 points. Ben Halvorsen added 17 points, and Pekarck grabbed a team-best eight rebounds for the Spartans.
West Monona shot 50 percent (20-of-40), including 5-of-11 on 3-point attempts. They fared shightly better than the Raptors with their foul shooting, finishing 19-of-30 (63.3%).

Ridge View always looks forward when they can play Western Valley Conference rival OABCIG (3-1). Friday they travel to Ida Grove for the boys/girls doubleheader.
