Lawton-Bronson vs MMCRU boys basketball

It’s only a matter of time, time that seems to drag on for an opponent who thinks their up to the challenge of facing Iowa Prep Illustrated / Iowa Grandstand Sports Class 1A No. 2 ranked Royals of MMCRU High School

Here were no hard charging challenge on behalf of that opponent Lawton-Bronson on Monday at Rockie Bork Court. The MMCRU boy’s basketball team is that good and has been all season handing a humbling loss to Lawton-Bronson 76-38. That makes it two in a row for the Royals against the Eagles, having won by 15 points a season ago.

Subbing freely throughout the game, as is MMCRU coach Cam Kuchel’s luxury, Kuchel kept fresh legs on the court, applied enough to pressure to remind Lawton-Bronson (and anyone scouting) that they’re not as good as they’re going to be after the holiday break.

The Royals forced 27 Lawton-Bronson turnovers in the victory. The final 5:57 of the game was played with the continous clock following a Brandon Dreckman steal and layup for the Royals.

MMCRU started the game on an 8-0 run with five different players scoring in the game’s first 3-1/2 minutes. A back court feed and basket by senior Michael Schmillen gave the Royals their first double-digit lead (16-5). The first quarter ended up 12 points 24-12.

The lead grew to as many as 28 points in the second quarter with 33 seconds remaining on the first half clock. The two teams went to the locker rooms at half with MMCRU leading 48-23. The Royals lead grew to 34 points, 63-29 at the end of three quarters.

Schmillen led a balanced Royals’ scoring attack with 14 points, one of four Royals to finish in double figures. Brandon Dreckman and Kam Bork each wound up with 13 points, and Josh Peterson finished with a double-double, 10 points to go with a game-best 10 rebounds.

For those who appreciate good played basketball, MMCRU is a sparkling 5-0 on the season with an average margin of victory 29.2 points. They have scored 70 points or more in four games this season, ranking them 12th overall in Class 1A for most points scored. Leaders the 1A field for total points is Burlington Notre Dame and Southwest Valley.
