HOLSTEIN — The Ridge View girls basketball team spitted and sputtered behind ice cold shooting, despite maintaining a lead through three quarters on Tuesday.
Iowa Prep Illustrated / Iowa Grandstand Sports Class 2A 11th-ranked Sioux Central played like they wanted to give the game away for three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Rebel come to life, outscoring RIdge View 15-6, earning the narrow 39-37 victory.
We battled all night and was really proud of the girl’s effort. We just couldn’t quite hold on. We got ourselves into some foul trouble late and had some costly turnovers that really allowed them to work their way back into it. I was happy with our attention on the defensive end. We had strong court awareness and worked well together keeping them out of their attack. Just needed to be more consistent and string a complete 32 minutes together.”
- Brian Bode, Ridge View head girls basketball coach
Ridge View maintained a 9-7 lead after one quarter and had an 18-13 lead at halftime. The third quarter for Ridge View was its most productive of the night scoring 13 points and pushing the lead to seven points 31-24.
Ridge View showed fight in spurts, but it boiled down to 14-of-47 (29.8%) shooting from the floor, that included 1-of-12 (8.3%) on 3-point attempts. Sioux Central’s starters outscored Ridge View’s five starters 37-30. The Raptors saw 16 of the 37 points go to sophomore Jayna Aschinger. She was the lone Raptors player in double figures.
Sioux Center relied heavily upon a pair of senior in Avery Wilson and Nora Christian. Wilson scored a game-high 22 points and had a team-best seven rebounds. Christian added six points and five rebounds.
Ridge View came into the game averaging 45.7 points per game. The Raptors ended the first half of the season scoring only 29 points in a humbling loss to state-ranked Newell-Fonda.
The additional 19 turnovers against Sioux Central by Ridge View proved costly.
“Looking back, lots of things will show up where you say what if. We have to be better about taking care of the ball and finishing around the rim. The shots in the first quarter are just as important as the ones in the final seconds, especially when games are this close.”
- Brian Bode, Ridge View girls head basketball coach
