Dominant showing by Cherokee girls in win over ELC; Stowater’s performance boosts Cherokee boys

CHEROKEE — Everything came up roses for three quarters of the Lakes Conference girls basketball matchup for Iowa Prep Illustrated / Iowa Grandstand Sports ninth-ranked (Class 3A) Cherokee on Friday betwin a 58-21 win over Estherville-Lincoln Central.

Cherokee avenged a 24-point (57-33) loss to the Midgets the last time the two teams faced off against one another from March 3, 2025.

Cherokee pushed its record to 8-1 capitalizing on an explosive first quarter offensively in which they outscored Estherville-Lincoln Central 24-8. They did the same in the second quarter 18-9 for the 42-17 halftime lead.

Estherville-Lincoln Central found it impossible a1gainst ‘Controlled Chaos’ a term fitting of the Cherokee defensive effort. The Braves shutout the Midgets in the third period, pushing their lead to 36-points (53-17).

Estherville-Lincoln Central was unable to establish any sort of traction offensively as they shot only 22 percent (8-of-36) from the floor overall in the game, including 2-of-16 (12.5%) on three point tries. The Midgets experienced equal frustration at ting 3-of-8 (37.5%).

Senior Morgan Claubaugh led the Midgets with eight points. Freshman Ella Soper led on the boards for Estherville-LIncon Central with seven.

There were 13 players who saw floor time for Cherokee with seven scoring. Three of the Braves starters finished scoring in double figures — Deidra Doeden 16, Addy Wolfswinkel 12, and Kadyn Volkert 11.

Doeden continues to be success story for Cherokee notching her 28th career doubkle-double. Most recently she went over 500 rebounds for her career. Against Estherville-Lincoln, Doeden led all players with 11 rebounds. She also dealt out three assists and three steals, along with three blocked shots to her credit.

Wolfswinkel felt a bit shy of her 19 points per game average, but she added five assists and six rebounds to her statistical line for the game.

On Monday evening Cherokee hosted non-conference opponent MOC/Floyd Valley in Cherokee. Tonight, another non-conference game is slated at Sioux Center (7-4).

Estherville-Lincoln Central at Cherokee boys basketball

Cherokee finished one of its best shooting performance in a game this season on Friday. The Braves connected on 27-of-49 shots (55.1%) from the field overall. This included a night which saw 7-of-18 (39%) of their three-point attempts go through the basket.

The hot shooting coincided with a strong performance on the boards, as Cherokee rebounded Estherville-Lincoln Central by 12 (31-19) in the game won by Cherokee 70-54.

It marks back-to-back wins by the Braves against their guest and four of last five in all time meetings.

It will be a night of rememberance for Cherokee senior Landen Stowater as finished with a doubkle-double performance, 12 points and 12 rebounds. In addition, Stowater led the Braves with five assists and three steals.

It was the second game Cherokee was without starting guard Jaxon Paulsrud, who had a prior college commitment already set up.

Senior Coy Lewis on 7-of-11 shooting finished with 17 points to pace Cherokee, and Cameron Kohn chipped in with 11 points.

Three players for Estherville-Lincoln Central also manage to work into scoring double figures, as the Midgets shot 41 percent (21-of-51), including sinking nine three-point shots.

Junior Amari Armstrong finished with a game-high 20 point to go with five rebounds for Estherville-Lincoln Central. Jackson Struve added 17 points to go with five rebounds and five assists. Kaden Fechter added 12 points for the Midgets whose record falls to 3-6.

Next Up

Cherokee will play the second game of the girls-boys doubleheader in Sioux Center against the non-conference Warriors (6-4).
