MMCRU gals win third straight, climb back to .500; No. 2 ranked Royals hammer Generals 72-32

SIBLEY — MMCRU junior Chloe Alesch behind her seventh career double-double along with the supporting cast held off Sibley-Ocheyedan on Friday to earn the War Eagle Conference road win 49-42.

Alesch tied a career best 20 point outing earlier this season against Ridge View, while adding 13 rebounds.

Early on MMCRU was more agressive with contesting shot and faster to the ball reaction. The Royals built a 13-point 22-9 second quarter lead with Alesch getting the offensive putback off a missed foul shot. They were able to matain a lead of no fewer than nine points at the halftime buzzer.

The 16-8 first quarter, 29-20 halftime and 36-29 lead after three quarters made the win still attainable with a strong final eight inutes of play for Sibley-Ocheyedan. On three seperate occassions, the Generals cut the deficit to four points in the final 4:39 of the game. The latest bid for the comeback ended at 2:54 left trailing 42-38.

MMCRU finished outrebounded by Sibley-Ocheyedan 42-34.

The host Generals had an immense 36 turnovers and only 24 percent shooting (13-of-54) from the floor overall. They were only 9-of-16 (56.2%) on their foul shots.Freshman Lucy Heitritter led Sibley-Ocheyedan in scoring with 15 points, while sophomore Aleah Marco added 11. Sophomore Hailey Gacke led the Generals efforts on the glass with seven rebounds.

Tia Tentinger was a constant nuisance at creating chaos with her play defensively for MMCRU. Tentinger had a career-best 13 steals.

Sibley-Ocheyedan has its record fall to 2-8 overall on the season.

The thrill of a win came early on in the War Eagle Conference matchup against SIbley-Ocheyedan for the No. 2-ranked (Class 1A) MMCRU boy’s basketball team on Friday.

The margin lof the MMCRU victory was 40 points, 72-32. The 40 point margin of victory is second to only the 52 point on Tuesday against Trinity Christian. The average point differential for MMCRU in its nine games is +36.3 points against their opponent.

MMCRU had already took its first double-digit lead of the game at 15-5 with 1:03 remaining in the opening quarter on an offensive putback by Kam Bork. At quarters end the Royals led 18-5.

The first three offensive possessions of the second quarter saw Sibley-Ocheyedan turn the ball over. MMCRU would reel off nine unanswered points pushing the lead to 27-5 with 5:11 remaining in the first half. The half ended with MMCRU leading Sibley-Ocheyedan 37-13.

The MMCRU lead got as great as 32 points (53-21) when the Royals Wyatt Alesch connected on a two point shot. The third period ended with the Royals up 53-23.

A 3-point field goal by Brandon Dreckman with 6:14 remaining to be played gave MMCRU its first lead of 40 points 63-23, part of a 12-0 MMCRU run that had the Royals lead at one point of 42 points (65-23).

All five MMCRU starters scored in double figures, eight players in all scored. Michael Schmillen scored 10 of his game-high 14 points in the first half. Bork added 12 points. Eli Schlenger, Alesch, and Josh Peterson each finished with 10 points for the Royals, who shot a blistering 58 percent (33-of-57) for the game.

Arguably, it was one of the cleanest games of the season for the Royals who committed onlyseven fouls and committed six turnovers.

Gavin Stanton and Alex Kruger each had nine points for the Generals. Dawson Kreykes chiiped in with seven points off the bench.The Generals committed 30 turnovers in the loss.

The loss snaps a two-game winning streak by Sibley-Ocheyedan. The Generals record on the season stands at 6-4 overall, after starting the season 0-2.
