HOLSTEIN — It was hard to watch the Western Valley Conference basketball game for Ridge View fans on Friday. A talented and Iowa Prep Illustrated / Iowa Grandstand Sports No. 7-ranked (Class 2A) Westwood exploited the Raptors.

The final 46-21 tells how much it was an offensive struggle for Ridge View.
Westwood has won three consecutive games against Ridge View and four of five since Jan.. of 2013. It is the second time this season Ridge View has dropped back-to-back games.

There were 19 turnovers and a below acceptable 18.2 percent overall, and 3-of-7 (43%) at the foul line. There wasn’t a single Raptors’ player who scored double figures.

“We struggled to find any offensive rhythm tonight, shooting 8-of-44 and 2-of-14 from three tells the story. At times our shots were forced, and we never really seemed in sync as a group.”

  • Brian Bode, Ridge View head girls basketball coach

The leading scorer for Ridge View was sophomore Jayna Aschinger with nine points. Junior Chloe Murphy added five points and finished with seven rebounds, two rebounds off team leader Olivia Feilmeiler’s nine.
Ridge View finished a plus +3 (31-28) on the boards.

Following a 5-5 tie after one quarter, Westwood caught first in the second quarter to take a 23-9 halftime lead.

“They went on an 18–4 run in the second quarter and hit four threes during that stretch. That gave them momentum and put us in a hole we couldn’t climb out of. There were stretches where we did a good job challenging shots and making things difficult for them, but there were also moments where our intensity wasn’t where it needed to be.”

  • Brian Bode, Ridge View head girls basketball coach

The 21 point total for the game by Ridge View was the fewest for a game this season. With the first (5) and fourth quarter (0) against Westwood, they’re two of seven quarters for least production this season.

Cate Drees finished with a double-double (14 points/10 rebounds) to lead Westwood. Brenna Johnson also finished with 14 points.

Westwood improves its record to 10-0. Ridge View falls to .500 on the season at 6-6 overall.
