Iowa State wrestling defeats Oklahoma 29-10 on the road

In the first of two duals on a road trip to Oklahoma, Iowa State wrestling secured the first matchup in style.

Iowa State downed Oklahoma 29-10 on Jan. 30 in Norman, Okla. While the Cyclones did not wrestle the usual starters, Evan Frost at 133 or Rocky Elam at 197, they still found a way to roll. They won seven of 10 bouts, including five in bonus-point fashion at 141, 149, 157, 165 and 285.

The Cyclones opened with a pair of wins by decision at 125 and 133. Stevo Poulin’s first-period takedown earned a 5-1 decision over Conrad Hendriksen, followed by Adrian Meza’s reversal in the third period and riding-time advantage, helping him rally to win 6-5 over Carter Schmidt. Anthony Echemendia really got the ball rolling for Iowa State with a 20-4 technical fall over Tyson Charmoli behind six takedowns (two in each period).

Jacob Frost and Vinny Zerban closed the first half of the dual strong, as Jacob Frost had a 12-2 major decision over Hunter Hollingsworth and Zerban won in an 11-2 major decision over Layton Schneider. Then Connor Euton came out firing at 165 out of the break. His takedown into four near-fall points in the third period helped him defeat Peyten Kellar in a 19-1 technical fall (Kellar is a former NCAA All-American).

Oklahoma swung back in the next three bouts with a 5-1 decision from Carter Schubert over MJ Gaitan at 174, a 4-1 sudden victory win for Brian Soldano over Isaac Dean at 184 and an 8-0 major decision for DJ Parker over CJ Carter at 197. Iowa State’s Yonger Bastida ended the dual on a high note and continued his winning ways with a 20-4 technical fall over former Iowa Hawkeye Bradley Hill.

The Cyclones will be back in action on Feb. 1, traveling just down the road to face Oklahoma State in Stillwater after the Cowboys’ trashing of UNI on Jan. 30.
