Hornseth’s 21 lead Northern Iowa past Evansville 71-55

UNI closes out January with double-digit win against Purple Aces.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Will Hornseth’s 21 points helped Northern Iowa defeat Evansville 71-55 on Saturday.

Hornseth shot 10 of 12 from the field for the Panthers (14-9, 6-6 Missouri Valley Conference). Trey Campbell added 12 points while shooting 5 of 8, including 2 of 4 from beyond the arc, while they also had 10 assists. Leon Bond III went 4 of 7 from the field (3 for 6 from 3-point range) to finish with 11 points, while adding six rebounds.

AJ Casey led the way for the Purple Aces (5-17, 1-10) with 17 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Leif Moeller added 14 points and three steals for Evansville.

Northern Iowa took the lead with 16:45 remaining in the first half and did not trail again. Hornseth led with 11 points in the first half to go up 41-21 at the break. Northern Iowa was outscored by Evansville in the second half by a four-point margin, but still wound up on top, while Hornseth led the way with a team-high 10 second-half points.

UNI ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • UNI improves to 39-30 all-time in the series with Evansville, notching its fourth straight win over the Purple Aces. The Panthers have now won 12 consecutive home games against Evansville and have now also swept the Purple Aces in the regular season in consecutive seasons.
  • Saturday’s game marks the 12th game this season the Northern Iowa defense has held an opponent under 60 points, improving to 10-2 in such games.
  • Northern Iowa’s 41 first half points were the most scored by the Panthers against an MVC opponent in the opening period this season.
  • UNI has now held 11 of its last 13 opponents under 30% for a game in three-point shooting percentage. The Panthers, who have made at least one three-pointer in 170 consecutive games, sank ten three-point baskets against the Purple Aces, the most against an MVC team this season.
  • Trey Campbell’s 12-point, ten assist game marked the first double-double of his career.
  • Campbell started his 119th career game on Saturday, one start shy of tying Ben Jacobson (2002-06) for third-most in team history. Campbell’s 119 career starts are most among active players in the MVC.
  • Saturday marked the fourth career double-double game for Ben Schwieger, including his second of the 2025-26 season.
  • Leon Bond III sits 18 points shy of scoring his 500th point as a Panther after Wednesday’s game.
