Hawkeyes Fourth as team at Big Ten Championships, qualify nine for NCAA Championships

Penn State dominates Big Ten Wrestling Tournament, crown seven individual champions.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The college wrestling postseason has arrived.

The toughest conference tournament in Division I, the Big Ten Championships, was held March 7-8 at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State University. Fourteen teams and 140 wrestlers were seeking conference titles.

The Iowa wrestling team was is in fourth place with 70 points after Day 1. The Hawkeyes had one finalist on Sunday afternoon — Mikey Caliendo at 165 pounds.

Iowa wrestling took fourth at the Big Ten Championships, automatically qualifying nine wrestlers for the NCAA Championships.

While the Hawkeyes did not have a conference champion for the third-consecutive year, they did set themselves up for NCAAs with their performances. Dean Peterson (125, fifth place), Drake Ayala (third place, 133), Nasir Bailey (third place, 141), Ryder Block (ninth place, 149), Michael Caliendo (second place, 165), Patrick Kennedy (fourth place, 174), Angelo Ferrari (eighth place, 184), Gabe Arnold (ninth place, 197) and Ben Kueter (fourth place, 285) all qualified for NCAAs in Cleveland. Victor Voinovich (ninth) will need an at-large bid to keep his season alive.
