GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers lost another defensive end on the first day teams were able to negotiate with free agents.
Backup Kingsley Enagbare joined Rashan Gary as an ex-Packer after he his representatives reported he had agreed to a one-year, $10 million deal with the New York Jets on March 9.
Earlier in the day, the Packers traded Gary, a starter, to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick.
The Gary trade mostly dealt with his $28 million salary-cap number and lack of production, but in the case of Enagbare, the Packers no longer need defensive ends who weigh 260 pounds. They’ll be looking for speed rushers and large run-stoppers to fit defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s multiple-front system.
It’s unclear how Enagbare’s deal is structured and whether the Jets can cut him before the season without taking too much of a cap hit. It’s also unclear why he accepted a one-year deal instead of something long-term, but if he does have a big year, he can hit free agency again in 2027.
Enagbare was a solid backup for the Packers, playing behind Micah Parson and Gary. He had only two sacks, six quarterback hits and 14 pressures in just over 500 snaps. But he had six tackles for loss, which ranked second on the team behind linebacker Quay Walker.
In the regular season, he had 38 tackles, no forced fumbles and no passes defensed.
The Packers’ top edge rushers are Parsons, Lukas Van Ness, Barryn Sorrell and Collin Oliver. Brenton Cox Jr. and Arron Mosby are restricted free agents, but it’s possible the Packers won’t issue tenders to either, making them free agents on March 11.
