AMES — T.J. Otzelberger officially is adding Cincinnati assistant coach Tim Buckley to his staff, the school announces on Monday morning. Buckley fills one of two openings on Iowa State’s staff.
At 62, Buckley is a seasoned veteran in the coaching world with nearly 40 years of experience, including two years on Otzelberger’s staff at UNLV from 2019-2021.
Once Otzelberger left for Ames in 2021, Buckley stayed on staff in Vegas under Kevin Kruger for one season. After UNLV, Buckley worked as an assistant for South Carolina before jumping to South Carolina for two seasons.
He’s most known for his time at Indiana, working under Tom Crean during his entire nine year tenure as the associate head coach. While in Bloomington, he earned the nickname “the Shot Doctor” for his work in developing the Hoosiers into one of the best shooting programs in the country.
Crean has publicly credited Buckley for recruiting Yogi Ferrell and Cody Zeller to Bloomington, as well as Dwayne Wade to Marquette.

In-between his time at Indiana and UNLV, Buckley spent two years as a scout for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He’s also spent 10 years as a head coach at Ball State and Rockford (D-III.)
