The Portland Fire have added another player to compete in the paint this year.
On Sunday, the Fire signed Megan Gustafson to a two-year deal. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Alexa Phillipou and confirmed by The Oregonian/OregonLive.
A release from the team said that Gustafson will wear No. 17 with the Fire.
A 6-foot-4 center, Gustafson is a seven-year WNBA veteran and has mostly seen action coming off the bench.
In 2025, Gustafson only saw action in 20 games due to injury. In 11.3 minutes per game, she averaged three points and 1.8 rebounds. She is also a strong shooter, making 35.6% of 3-pointers in her career.
Gustafson’s highlight for the year came in game three of the WNBA Finals. The Phoenix Mercury had the ball with 20 seconds left in a game tied at 88-88. Gustafson was able to get her hand on the ball for a partial block and grabbed the defensive rebound. The play set up A’ja Wilson to make the game-winning shot and the Aces would go on to win the series.
Gustafson will likely see more action in 2026, as the Fire roster remains light on centers. Portland’s only other true center as of Sunday is Luisa Geiselsöder, who is 6-foot-4 and has only played one year in the WNBA.
After the expansion draft, Fire general manager Vanja Černivec said that finding more post players would be a priority before training camp.
Outside of WNBA play, Gustafson has seen a lot of success overseas. She won the 2023 Greek League championship with Olympiacos Piraeus and won the EuroCup Championship in 2024 with the London Lions.
Gustafson played college basketball for Iowa, where she was a three-time first team All-Big Ten selection, an AP All-American in 2019, the Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year in 2019 and a Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 2019.
She led the NCAA in scoring in both 2018 and 2019, and was selected in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings.
